Deep rooted

The Jonika Onion is deep rooted in the clay soil of Zeeland. Halfway through the last century, Joost Nieuwenhuijse founded Jonika B.V. in Oostdijk, as an onion sorting and packing station for onion growers in Zeeland. The onions soon found their way to clients at home and abroad, which signified the birth of a booming company. Jonika continued to grow healthily, as did the cultivation area, which now covers the entire Netherlands. By now, the family firm has developed into a modern and innovative company which is a leading player on the onion market worldwide.

This success is all about the lifelong passion for onions. It is a passion passed down from father to son, as the third generation of Nieuwenhuijse is in charge of the company these days. Over the course of Jonika's history, the focus has gradually shifted from sorting, storage and packaging of onions to the actual cultivation process.
